Lai Sun Development (HKG:488) adds HK$160m to market cap in the past 7 days, though investors from five years ago are still down 89%
Lai Sun Development Company Limited (HKG:488) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 17% in the last week. But spare a thought for the long term holders, who have held the stock as it bled value over the last five years. Like a ship taking on water, the share price has sunk 91% in that time. While the recent increase might be a green shoot, we're certainly hesitant to rejoice. The fundamental business performance will ultimately determine if the turnaround can be sustained. We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway.
On a more encouraging note the company has added HK$160m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the five-year loss for shareholders.
Check out our latest analysis for Lai Sun Development
Lai Sun Development wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.
Over half a decade Lai Sun Development reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 1.8% for each year. While far from catastrophic that is not good. The share price fall of 14% (per year, over five years) is a stern reminder that money-losing companies are expected to grow revenue. It takes a certain kind of mental fortitude (or recklessness) to buy shares in a company that loses money and doesn't grow revenue. Fear of becoming a 'bagholder' may be keeping people away from this stock.

A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 25% in the last year, Lai Sun Development shareholders lost 22%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 14% doled out over the last five years. We'd need to see some sustained improvements in the key metrics before we could muster much enthusiasm. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Lai Sun Development has 3 warning signs (and 2 which are a bit concerning) we think you should know about.
