Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By Midland Holdings Limited's (HKG:1200) Revenues Despite 28% Price Jump

Midland Holdings Limited (HKG:1200) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 28% after a shaky period beforehand. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 39% in the last twelve months.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Midland Holdings' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Real Estate industry in Hong Kong, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 0.6x and even P/S above 3x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Midland Holdings' Recent Performance Look Like?

Recent times haven't been great for Midland Holdings as its revenue has been falling quicker than most other companies. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to improve at all. If you still like the company, you'd want its revenue trajectory to turn around before making any decisions. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the revenue slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Midland Holdings would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 12% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 16% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 13% during the coming year according to the only analyst following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 7.6% growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Midland Holdings' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Final Word

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Midland Holdings' P/S close to the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Midland Holdings' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.
