We're Not Very Worried About Kuaishou Technology's (HKG:1024) Cash Burn Rate
Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.
So, the natural question for Kuaishou Technology (HKG:1024) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

When Might Kuaishou Technology Run Out Of Money?
You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. In June 2022, Kuaishou Technology had CN¥32b in cash, and was debt-free. Importantly, its cash burn was CN¥15b over the trailing twelve months. Therefore, from June 2022 it had 2.2 years of cash runway. Importantly, though, analysts think that Kuaishou Technology will reach cashflow breakeven before then. In that case, it may never reach the end of its cash runway. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.
How Well Is Kuaishou Technology Growing?
Notably, Kuaishou Technology actually ramped up its cash burn very hard and fast in the last year, by 130%, signifying heavy investment in the business. But the silver lining is that operating revenue increased by 26% in that time. Considering both these factors, we're not particularly excited by its growth profile. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
Can Kuaishou Technology Raise More Cash Easily?
Kuaishou Technology seems to be in a fairly good position, in terms of cash burn, but we still think it's worthwhile considering how easily it could raise more money if it wanted to. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Kuaishou Technology has a market capitalisation of CN¥219b and burnt through CN¥15b last year, which is 6.7% of the company's market value. Given that is a rather small percentage, it would probably be really easy for the company to fund another year's growth by issuing some new shares to investors, or even by taking out a loan.
So, Should We Worry About Kuaishou Technology's Cash Burn?
It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way Kuaishou Technology is burning through its cash. For example, we think its cash burn relative to its market cap suggests that the company is on a good path. While we must concede that its increasing cash burn is a bit worrying, the other factors mentioned in this article provide great comfort when it comes to the cash burn.
