Sunway International Holdings Limited's (HKG:58) 273% Price Boost Is Out Of Tune With Revenues

Sunway International Holdings Limited (HKG:58) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 273% gain and recovering from prior weakness. The last month tops off a massive increase of 160% in the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Sunway International Holdings' P/S ratio of 0.1x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Basic Materials industry in Hong Kong is also close to 0.6x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Sunway International Holdings' P/S Mean For Shareholders?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Sunway International Holdings over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think the company might still do enough to be in line with the broader industry in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Sunway International Holdings' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is Sunway International Holdings' Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Sunway International Holdings' is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 30%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 50% in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 3.7% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that Sunway International Holdings' P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

What Does Sunway International Holdings' P/S Mean For Investors?

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Sunway International Holdings' P/S is back within range of the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

The fact that Sunway International Holdings currently trades at a P/S on par with the rest of the industry is surprising to us since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term, all while the industry is set to grow. When we see revenue heading backwards in the context of growing industry forecasts, it'd make sense to expect a possible share price decline on the horizon, sending the moderate P/S lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, investors will have a hard time accepting the share price as fair value.
