Do China Risun Group's (HKG:1907) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.
If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in China Risun Group (HKG:1907). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

China Risun Group's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Over the last three years, China Risun Group has grown EPS by 17% per year. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). China Risun Group shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 6.7% to 13%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check China Risun Group's balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.
Are China Risun Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like the kids in the streets standing up for their beliefs, insider share purchases give me reason to believe in a brighter future. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.
The good news is that China Risun Group insiders spent a whopping CN¥57m on stock in just one year, and I didn't see any selling. And so I find myself almost expectant, and certainly hopeful, that this large outlay signals prescient optimism for the business. It is also worth noting that it was CEO & Chairman Xuegang Yang who made the biggest single purchase, worth HK$9.5m, paying HK$4.75 per share.
On top of the insider buying, we can also see that China Risun Group insiders own a large chunk of the company. In fact, they own 70% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. At the current share price, that insider holding is worth a whopping CN¥13b. That means they have plenty of their own capital riding on the performance of the business!
Does China Risun Group Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
One positive for China Risun Group is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. On top of that, we've seen insiders buying shares even though they already own plenty. To me, that all makes it well worth a spot on your watchlist, as well as continuing research. You should always think about risks though. Case in point, we've spotted 3 warning signs for China Risun Group you should be aware of.
