L'Occitane International's (HKG:973) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
L'Occitane International S.A. (HKG:973) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 21st of October to €0.4876. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 2.1%.

L'Occitane International Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning
While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. Before making this announcement, L'Occitane International was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
The next 12 months is set to see EPS grow by 41.6%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could get very high, which probably can't continue without starting to put some pressure on the balance sheet.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The annual payment during the last 10 years was €0.0247 in 2012, and the most recent fiscal year payment was €0.0659. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 10% over that duration. L'Occitane International has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. L'Occitane International has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 13% per annum. A low payout ratio and decent growth suggests that the company is reinvesting well, and it also has plenty of room to increase the dividend over time.
We Really Like L'Occitane International's Dividend
In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
