It's Down 28% But Yidu Tech Inc. (HKG:2158) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks
Yidu Tech Inc. (HKG:2158) shares have had a horrible month, losing 28% after a relatively good period beforehand. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 47% share price drop.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Yidu Tech's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 5.2x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Hong Kong's Healthcare Services industry is similar at about 6.1x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Yidu Tech Has Been Performing
Yidu Tech could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Yidu Tech's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 35% decrease to the company's top line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 44% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 30% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 17% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we find it interesting that Yidu Tech is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Yidu Tech's plummeting stock price has brought its P/S back to a similar region as the rest of the industry. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Yidu Tech currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the wider industry. When we see a strong revenue outlook, with growth outpacing the industry, we can only assume potential uncertainty around these figures are what might be placing slight pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
