Here's Why We Think COFCO Joycome Foods (HKG:1610) Is Well Worth Watching

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in COFCO Joycome Foods (HKG:1610). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is COFCO Joycome Foods Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Over the last three years, COFCO Joycome Foods has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Like a firecracker arcing through the night sky, COFCO Joycome Foods's EPS shot from CN¥0.41 to CN¥1.02, over the last year. Year on year growth of 152% is certainly a sight to behold. That could be a sign that the business has reached a true inflection point.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. COFCO Joycome Foods shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 11% to 33%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are COFCO Joycome Foods Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I always like to check up on CEO compensation, because I think that reasonable pay levels, around or below the median, can be a sign that shareholder interests are well considered. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like COFCO Joycome Foods with market caps between CN¥6.5b and CN¥21b is about CN¥3.6m.

The COFCO Joycome Foods CEO received total compensation of just CN¥1.5m in the year to . That's clearly well below average, so at a glance, that arrangement seems generous to shareholders, and points to a modest remuneration culture. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Does COFCO Joycome Foods Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

COFCO Joycome Foods's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. With rocketing profits, its seems likely the business has a rosy future; and it may have hit an inflection point. At the same time the reasonable CEO compensation reflects well on the board of directors. While I couldn't be sure without a deeper dive, it does seem that COFCO Joycome Foods has the hallmarks of a quality business; and that would make it well worth watching.
