Yihai International Holding Ltd. (HKG:1579) Stock's Been Sliding But Fundamentals Look Decent: Will The Market Correct The Share Price In The Future?
Yihai International Holding (HKG:1579) has had a rough three months with its share price down 9.0%. However, the company's fundamentals look pretty decent, and long-term financials are usually aligned with future market price movements. Particularly, we will be paying attention to Yihai International Holding's ROE today.
ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In other words, it is a profitability ratio which measures the rate of return on the capital provided by the company's shareholders.
How Is ROE Calculated?
The formula for return on equity is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Yihai International Holding is:
17% = CN¥799m ÷ CN¥4.7b (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).
The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. One way to conceptualize this is that for each HK$1 of shareholders' capital it has, the company made HK$0.17 in profit.

What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?
So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.
Yihai International Holding's Earnings Growth And 17% ROE
To start with, Yihai International Holding's ROE looks acceptable. On comparing with the average industry ROE of 6.0% the company's ROE looks pretty remarkable. However, we are curious as to how the high returns still resulted in flat growth for Yihai International Holding in the past five years. Therefore, there could be some other aspects that could potentially be preventing the company from growing. For example, it could be that the company has a high payout ratio or the business has allocated capital poorly, for instance.
We then compared Yihai International Holding's performance with the industry and found that the company has shrunk its earnings at a slower rate than the industry earnings which has seen its earnings shrink by 4.0% in the same 5-year period. While this is not particularly good, its not particularly bad either.
Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. The investor should try to establish if the expected growth or decline in earnings, whichever the case may be, is priced in. This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Is 1579 fairly valued? This infographic on the company's intrinsic value has everything you need to know.
Is Yihai International Holding Efficiently Re-investing Its Profits?
In spite of a normal three-year median payout ratio of 30% (or a retention ratio of 70%), Yihai International Holding hasn't seen much growth in its earnings. So there could be some other explanation in that regard. For instance, the company's business may be deteriorating.
Additionally, Yihai International Holding has paid dividends over a period of seven years, which means that the company's management is determined to pay dividends even if it means little to no earnings growth. Our latest analyst data shows that the future payout ratio of the company is expected to rise to 83% over the next three years. Despite the higher expected payout ratio, the company's ROE is not expected to change by much.
Summary
On the whole, we do feel that Yihai International Holding has some positive attributes. However, given the high ROE and high profit retention, we would expect the company to be delivering strong earnings growth, but that isn't the case here. This suggests that there might be some external threat to the business, that's hampering its growth. Having said that, looking at current analyst estimates, we found that the company's earnings growth rate is expected to see a huge improvement.
