Oriental Explorer Holdings Might Find It Hard To Continue The Dividend

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Oriental Explorer Holdings is not generating a profit, but its free cash flows easily cover the dividend, leaving plenty for reinvestment in the business. In general, cash flows are more important than the more traditional measures of profit so we feel pretty comfortable with the dividend at this level.

Over the next year, EPS could expand by 41.0% if recent trends continue. This is the right direction to be moving, but it is probably not enough to achieve profitability. Unless this happens fairly soon, the dividend could start to come under pressure.

Oriental Explorer Holdings' Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

Even in its short history, we have seen the dividend cut. The payments haven't really changed that much since 3 years ago. It's encouraging to see some dividend growth, but the dividend has been cut at least once, and the size of the cut would eliminate most of the growth anyway, which makes this less attractive as an income investment.

The Company Could Face Some Challenges Growing The Dividend

Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Oriental Explorer Holdings has impressed us by growing EPS at 41% per year over the past five years. Even though the company is not profitable, it is growing at a solid clip. If this trajectory continues and the company can turn a profit soon, it could bode well for the dividend going forward.

Our Thoughts On Oriental Explorer Holdings' Dividend

Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
