More Unpleasant Surprises Could Be In Store For Okura Holdings Limited's (HKG:1655) Shares After Tumbling 35%
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Okura Holdings Limited (HKG:1655) shares are down a considerable 35% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 83% loss during that time.
Even after such a large drop in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Okura Holdings' P/S ratio of 0.2x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Hospitality industry in Hong Kong is also close to 0.6x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Has Okura Holdings Performed Recently?
The recent revenue growth at Okura Holdings would have to be considered satisfactory if not spectacular. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to only match most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from rising. If not, then at least existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Okura Holdings' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 7.3%. Revenue has also lifted 11% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 16% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker, based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Okura Holdings' P/S is comparable to that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.
The Final Word
With its share price dropping off a cliff, the P/S for Okura Holdings looks to be in line with the rest of the Hospitality industry. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Okura Holdings revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't resulting in a lower P/S as per our expectations, given they look worse than current industry outlook. When we see weak revenue with slower than industry growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, bringing the P/S back in line with expectations. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.
