I Ran A Stock Scan For Earnings Growth And Li Ning (HKG:2331) Passed With Ease
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Li Ning (HKG:2331). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

Li Ning's Improving Profits
In the last three years Li Ning's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like a firecracker arcing through the night sky, Li Ning's EPS shot from CN¥0.69 to CN¥1.53, over the last year. Year on year growth of 122% is certainly a sight to behold. The best case scenario? That the business has hit a true inflection point.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Li Ning shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 14% to 22%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

The trick, as an investor, is to find companies that are going to perform well in the future, not just in the past. To that end, right now and today, you can check our visualization of consensus analyst forecasts for future Li Ning EPS 100% free.
Are Li Ning Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Since Li Ning has a market capitalization of HK$153b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they hold CN¥308m worth of its stock. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Even though that's only about 0.2% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.
Is Li Ning Worth Keeping An Eye On?
Li Ning's earnings have taken off like any random crypto-currency did, back in 2017. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering Li Ning for a spot on your watchlist. What about risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Li Ning you should know about.
