Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On M&L Holdings Group Limited (HKG:8152) Even After 31% Share Price Boost

M&L Holdings Group Limited (HKG:8152) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 31% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 5.0% isn't as attractive.

Although its price has surged higher, there still wouldn't be many who think M&L Holdings Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Hong Kong's Trade Distributors industry is similar at about 0.5x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Has M&L Holdings Group Performed Recently?

M&L Holdings Group certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing its revenue at a really rapid pace. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to taper off, which has kept the P/S from rising. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for M&L Holdings Group, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For M&L Holdings Group?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like M&L Holdings Group's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 69%. The latest three year period has also seen a 30% overall rise in revenue, aided extensively by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 3.2% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's curious that M&L Holdings Group's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Final Word

M&L Holdings Group appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

To our surprise, M&L Holdings Group revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't contributing to its P/S as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/S ratio. While recent revenue trends over the past medium-term suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to see the likelihood of revenue fluctuations in the future.
