Even With A 33% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Century Energy International Holdings Limited's (HKG:8132) Performance Completely

Century Energy International Holdings Limited (HKG:8132) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 33% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 37% in the last twelve months.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Century Energy International Holdings' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Hong Kong's Electrical industry is similar at about 0.6x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Century Energy International Holdings Has Been Performing

For example, consider that Century Energy International Holdings' financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing revenue performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from falling. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Century Energy International Holdings?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Century Energy International Holdings' to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 1.3%. The latest three year period has seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, a stark contrast to the last 12 months. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company, but investors will want to ask why it is now in decline.

Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 28% shows it's noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we find it interesting that Century Energy International Holdings is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Bottom Line On Century Energy International Holdings' P/S

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Century Energy International Holdings' P/S is back within range of the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Century Energy International Holdings currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/S ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.

Having said that, be aware Century Energy International Holdings is showing 4 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 3 of those are a bit unpleasant.
