It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like North Asia Strategic Holdings (HKG:8080), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Fast Is North Asia Strategic Holdings Growing?

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. North Asia Strategic Holdings managed to grow EPS by 8.9% per year, over three years. That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Unfortunately, North Asia Strategic Holdings's revenue dropped 9.3% last year, but the silver lining is that EBIT margins improved from 4.5% to 7.1%. That falls short of ideal.

Since North Asia Strategic Holdings is no giant, with a market capitalization of HK$204m, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are North Asia Strategic Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So we're pleased to report that North Asia Strategic Holdings insiders own a meaningful share of the business. Indeed, with a collective holding of 67%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. This makes me think they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - something I like to see. With that sort of holding, insiders have about HK$137m riding on the stock, at current prices. That should be more than enough to keep them focussed on creating shareholder value!

Should You Add North Asia Strategic Holdings To Your Watchlist?

As I already mentioned, North Asia Strategic Holdings is a growing business, which is what I like to see. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. Still, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with North Asia Strategic Holdings .

Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
