For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Pizu Group Holdings (HKG:8053). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Quickly Is Pizu Group Holdings Increasing Earnings Per Share?

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, Pizu Group Holdings's EPS has grown 33% each year, compound, over three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away winners.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. This approach makes Pizu Group Holdings look pretty good, on balance; although revenue is flattish, EBIT margins improved from 22% to 31% in the last year. That's a real positive.

While profitability drives the upside, prudent investors always check the balance sheet, too.

Are Pizu Group Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like the kids in the streets standing up for their beliefs, insider share purchases give me reason to believe in a brighter future. Because oftentimes, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

One positive for Pizu Group Holdings, is that company insiders paid CN¥157k for shares in the last year. While this isn't much, we also note an absence of sales.

And the insider buying isn't the only sign of alignment between shareholders and the board, since Pizu Group Holdings insiders own more than a third of the company. Indeed, with a collective holding of 80%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. At the current share price, that insider holding is worth a whopping CN¥2.4b. Now that's what I call some serious skin in the game!

While insiders are apparently happy to hold and accumulate shares, that is just part of the pretty picture. The cherry on top is that the CEO, Fali Liu is paid comparatively modestly to CEOs at similar sized companies. For companies with market capitalizations between CN¥1.3b and CN¥5.2b, like Pizu Group Holdings, the median CEO pay is around CN¥2.2m.

The CEO of Pizu Group Holdings only received CN¥527k in total compensation for the year ending . That looks like modest pay to me, and may hint at a certain respect for the interests of shareholders. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.

Is Pizu Group Holdings Worth Keeping An Eye On?

For growth investors like me, Pizu Group Holdings's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. Not only that, but we can see that insiders both own a lot of, and are buying more, shares in the company. So I do think this is one stock worth watching. Of course, just because Pizu Group Holdings is growing does not mean it is undervalued.
