Xinte Energy Co., Ltd. (HKG:1799) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 32% after a shaky period beforehand. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 40% in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Xinte Energy's P/S ratio of 0.5x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Construction industry in Hong Kong is also close to 0.3x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has Xinte Energy Performed Recently?

Xinte Energy could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the market is expecting its poor revenue performance to improve, keeping the P/S from dropping. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Keen to find out how analysts think Xinte Energy's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

Xinte Energy's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 37% decrease to the company's top line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 34% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 7.5% as estimated by the five analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 9.9% growth, that's a disappointing outcome.

With this information, we find it concerning that Xinte Energy is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company reject the analyst cohort's pessimism and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining revenues are likely to weigh on the share price eventually.

The Bottom Line On Xinte Energy's P/S

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Xinte Energy's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our check of Xinte Energy's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue isn't bringing down its P/S as much as we would have predicted. When we see a gloomy outlook like this, our immediate thoughts are that the share price is at risk of declining, negatively impacting P/S. If we consider the revenue outlook, the P/S seems to indicate that potential investors may be paying a premium for the stock.

The company's balance sheet is another key area for risk analysis. You can assess many of the main risks through our free balance sheet analysis for Xinte Energy with six simple checks.

Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
