Is Progressive Path Group Holdings (HKG:1581) Using Debt In A Risky Way?
David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. Importantly, Progressive Path Group Holdings Limited (HKG:1581) does carry debt. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?
When Is Debt A Problem?
Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

What Is Progressive Path Group Holdings's Debt?
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of September 2022 Progressive Path Group Holdings had HK$66.2m of debt, an increase on HK$50.7m, over one year. But it also has HK$67.5m in cash to offset that, meaning it has HK$1.26m net cash.
How Healthy Is Progressive Path Group Holdings' Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Progressive Path Group Holdings had liabilities of HK$217.0m due within a year, and liabilities of HK$75.7m falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of HK$67.5m and HK$219.8m worth of receivables due within a year. So these liquid assets roughly match the total liabilities.
Given Progressive Path Group Holdings has a market capitalization of HK$101.7m, it's hard to believe these liabilities pose much threat. However, we do think it is worth keeping an eye on its balance sheet strength, as it may change over time. Despite its noteworthy liabilities, Progressive Path Group Holdings boasts net cash, so it's fair to say it does not have a heavy debt load! The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But you can't view debt in total isolation; since Progressive Path Group Holdings will need earnings to service that debt. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.
Over 12 months, Progressive Path Group Holdings saw its revenue hold pretty steady, and it did not report positive earnings before interest and tax. While that's not too bad, we'd prefer see growth.
So How Risky Is Progressive Path Group Holdings?
Although Progressive Path Group Holdings had an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss over the last twelve months, it made a statutory profit of HK$7.6m. So when you consider it has net cash, along with the statutory profit, the stock probably isn't as risky as it might seem, at least in the short term. With revenue growth uninspiring, we'd really need to see some positive EBIT before mustering much enthusiasm for this business. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. These risks can be hard to spot. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Progressive Path Group Holdings (of which 1 can't be ignored!) you should know about.
