With EPS Growth And More, Chuan Holdings (HKG:1420) Makes An Interesting Case
It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.
In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Chuan Holdings (HKG:1420), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.
How Fast Is Chuan Holdings Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
In the last three years Chuan Holdings' earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Impressively, Chuan Holdings' EPS catapulted from S$0.0031 to S$0.0064, over the last year. Year on year growth of 106% is certainly a sight to behold.
Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. The music to the ears of Chuan Holdings shareholders is that EBIT margins have grown from 1.2% to 7.8% in the last 12 months and revenues are on an upwards trend as well. Both of which are great metrics to check off for potential growth.

Since Chuan Holdings is no giant, with a market capitalisation of HK$164m, you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.
Are Chuan Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So those who are interested in Chuan Holdings will be delighted to know that insiders have shown their belief, holding a large proportion of the company's shares. In fact, they own 62% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. This should be seen as a good thing, as it means insiders have a personal interest in delivering the best outcomes for shareholders. Although, with Chuan Holdings being valued at HK$164m, this is a small company we're talking about. So this large proportion of shares owned by insiders only amounts to S$101m. That's not a huge stake in absolute terms, but it should help keep insiders aligned with other shareholders.
Should You Add Chuan Holdings To Your Watchlist?
Chuan Holdings' earnings per share growth have been climbing higher at an appreciable rate. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders should certainly brighten the view of the company. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So based on this quick analysis, we do think it's worth considering Chuan Holdings for a spot on your watchlist.
