Ideal Group (ATH:INTEK) Will Want To Turn Around Its Return Trends
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Ideal Group (ATH:INTEK) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Ideal Group, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.019 = €1.2m ÷ (€84m - €21m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2021).
Therefore, Ideal Group has an ROCE of 1.9%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Electronic industry average of 11%.

How Are Returns Trending?
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at Ideal Group doesn't inspire confidence. Around one year ago the returns on capital were 3.1%, but since then they've fallen to 1.9%. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
In Conclusion...
While returns have fallen for Ideal Group in recent times, we're encouraged to see that sales are growing and that the business is reinvesting in its operations. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 309% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So while the underlying trends could already be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
Since virtually every company faces some risks, it's worth knowing what they are, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Ideal Group (of which 1 shouldn't be ignored!) that you should know about.
