Telecom Plus' (LON:TEP) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
Telecom Plus Plc (LON:TEP) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 11th of August to £0.46. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 5.6%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Telecom Plus' Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Prior to this announcement, Telecom Plus' dividend made up quite a large proportion of earnings but only 32% of free cash flows. In general, cash flows are more important than earnings, so we are comfortable that the dividend will be sustainable going forward, especially with so much cash left over for reinvestment.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 36.4% over the next year. Under the assumption that the dividend will continue along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 72% which would be quite comfortable going to take the dividend forward.
Telecom Plus Has A Solid Track Record
The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The annual payment during the last 10 years was £0.31 in 2013, and the most recent fiscal year payment was £0.92. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 11% per annum over that time. It is good to see that there has been strong dividend growth, and that there haven't been any cuts for a long time.
Telecom Plus' Dividend Might Lack Growth
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Telecom Plus has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 17% per annum. Recently, the company has been able to grow earnings at a decent rate, but with the payout ratio on the higher end we don't think the dividend has many prospects for growth.
In Summary
Overall, this is a reasonable dividend, and it being raised is an added bonus. The payments look pretty sustainable with good earnings coverage and a reasonable track record. Taking all of this into consideration, the dividend looks viable moving forward, but investors should be mindful that the company has pushed the boundaries of sustainability in the past and may do so again.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
