Many Still Looking Away From SysGroup plc (LON:SYS)

SysGroup plc's (LON:SYS) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the IT industry in the United Kingdom, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.4x and even P/S above 4x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does SysGroup's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Revenue has risen firmly for SysGroup recently, which is pleasing to see. Perhaps the market is expecting this acceptable revenue performance to take a dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on SysGroup's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

SysGroup's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 15%. Revenue has also lifted 11% in aggregate from three years ago, mostly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 5.2% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is pretty similar based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that SysGroup's P/S falls short of its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders are more bearish than recent times would indicate and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From SysGroup's P/S?

Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

The fact that SysGroup currently trades at a low P/S relative to the industry is unexpected considering its recent three-year growth is in line with the wider industry forecast. There could be some unobserved threats to revenue preventing the P/S ratio from matching the company's performance. revenue trends suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to perceive a possibility of revenue volatility in the future.
