Viewing insider transactions for ITV plc's (LON:ITV ) over the last year, we see that insiders were net sellers. This means that a larger number of shares were sold by insiders in relation to shares purchased.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At ITV

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the MD of Commercial & Member of Management Board, Kelly Williams, for UK£215k worth of shares, at about UK£0.76 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (UK£0.79). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was only 22% of Kelly Williams's holding. The only individual insider seller over the last year was Kelly Williams.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. ITV insiders own about UK£10m worth of shares. That equates to 0.3% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
