OnTheMarket's (LON:OTMP) Promising Earnings May Rest On Soft Foundations
OnTheMarket plc (LON:OTMP) announced strong profits, but the stock was stagnant. Our analysis suggests that this might be because shareholders have noticed some concerning underlying factors.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
Importantly, our data indicates that OnTheMarket's profit was reduced by UK£512k, due to unusual items, over the last year. While deductions due to unusual items are disappointing in the first instance, there is a silver lining. We looked at thousands of listed companies and found that unusual items are very often one-off in nature. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. Assuming those unusual expenses don't come up again, we'd therefore expect OnTheMarket to produce a higher profit next year, all else being equal.

An Unusual Tax Situation
Just as we noted the unusual items, we must inform you that OnTheMarket received a tax benefit which contributed UK£1.5m to the bottom line. This is meaningful because companies usually pay tax rather than receive tax benefits. We're sure the company was pleased with its tax benefit. And given that it lost money last year, it seems possible that the benefit is evidence that it now expects to find value in its past tax losses. However, our data indicates that tax benefits can temporarily boost statutory profit in the year it is booked, but subsequently profit may fall back. In the likely event the tax benefit is not repeated, we'd expect to see its statutory profit levels drop, at least in the absence of strong growth. So while we think it's great to receive a tax benefit, it does tend to imply an increased risk that the statutory profit overstates the sustainable earnings power of the business.
Our Take On OnTheMarket's Profit Performance
In the last year OnTheMarket received a tax benefit, which boosted its profit in a way that might not be much more sustainable than turning prime farmland into gas fields. Having said that, it also had a unusual item reducing its profit. Having considered these factors, we don't think OnTheMarket's statutory profits give an overly harsh view of the business. If you want to do dive deeper into OnTheMarket, you'd also look into what risks it is currently facing. While conducting our analysis, we found that OnTheMarket has 2 warning signs and it would be unwise to ignore them.
Our examination of OnTheMarket has focussed on certain factors that can make its earnings look better than they are. But there are plenty of other ways to inform your opinion of a company. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to 'follow the money' and search out stocks that insiders are buying. While it might take a little research on your behalf, you may find this free collection of companies boasting high return on equity, or this list of stocks that insiders are buying to be useful.
