Some stocks are best avoided. It hits us in the gut when we see fellow investors suffer a loss. Imagine if you held Tullow Oil plc (LON:TLW) for half a decade as the share price tanked 85%. We also note that the stock has performed poorly over the last year, with the share price down 33%. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 22% in the last 90 days. We really hope anyone holding through that price crash has a diversified portfolio. Even when you lose money, you don't have to lose the lesson.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Tullow Oil became profitable within the last five years. Most would consider that to be a good thing, so it's counter-intuitive to see the share price declining. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.

In contrast to the share price, revenue has actually increased by 0.4% a year in the five year period. A more detailed examination of the revenue and earnings may or may not explain why the share price languishes; there could be an opportunity.
