There's No Escaping Indus Gas Limited's (LON:INDI) Muted Earnings Despite A 25% Share Price Rise

Indus Gas Limited (LON:INDI) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 25% after a shaky period beforehand. But the last month did very little to improve the 88% share price decline over the last year.

Although its price has surged higher, Indus Gas' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 2.7x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in the United Kingdom, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 16x and even P/E's above 28x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.

For instance, Indus Gas' receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Indus Gas?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Indus Gas would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 74%. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 68% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 20% shows it's an unpleasant look.

In light of this, it's understandable that Indus Gas' P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.

The Bottom Line On Indus Gas' P/E

Even after such a strong price move, Indus Gas' P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Indus Gas maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
