I Ran A Stock Scan For Earnings Growth And RIT Capital Partners (LON:RCP) Passed With Ease
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like RIT Capital Partners (LON:RCP). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Fast Is RIT Capital Partners Growing?
The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. It certainly is nice to see that RIT Capital Partners has managed to grow EPS by 31% per year over three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away winners.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Not all of RIT Capital Partners's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers I've used might not be the best representation of the underlying business. While we note RIT Capital Partners's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 33% to UK£541m. That's a real positive.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check RIT Capital Partners's balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.
Are RIT Capital Partners Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a UK£3.9b company like RIT Capital Partners. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at UK£191m. I would find that kind of skin in the game quite encouraging, if I owned shares, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience my success, or failure, with the stock.
Should You Add RIT Capital Partners To Your Watchlist?
For growth investors like me, RIT Capital Partners's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. I think that EPS growth is something to boast of, and it doesn't surprise me that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research. So the answer is that I do think this is a good stock to follow along with. Don't forget that there may still be risks. For instance, we've identified 1 warning sign for RIT Capital Partners that you should be aware of.
