So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. Importantly, Trainline Plc (LON:TRN) does carry debt. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

What Is Trainline's Net Debt?
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of February 2021 Trainline had UK£248.8m of debt, an increase on UK£141.8m, over one year. On the flip side, it has UK£36.6m in cash leading to net debt of about UK£212.3m.
How Healthy Is Trainline's Balance Sheet?
We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Trainline had liabilities of UK£42.2m falling due within a year, and liabilities of UK£267.2m due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had UK£36.6m in cash and UK£24.5m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by UK£248.3m.
Since publicly traded Trainline shares are worth a total of UK£2.03b, it seems unlikely that this level of liabilities would be a major threat. Having said that, it's clear that we should continue to monitor its balance sheet, lest it change for the worse. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Trainline can strengthen its balance sheet over time. In the last year Trainline had a loss before interest and tax, and actually shrunk its revenue by 74%, to UK£67m. That makes us nervous, to say the least.
Caveat Emptor
Not only did Trainline's revenue slip over the last twelve months, but it also produced negative earnings before interest and tax (EBIT). Indeed, it lost UK£100m at the EBIT level. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. So we think its balance sheet is a little strained, though not beyond repair. Another cause for caution is that is bled UK£147m in negative free cash flow over the last twelve months. So in short it's a really risky stock. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet.
