We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in InterContinental Hotels Group PLC (LON:IHG).

What Is Insider Selling?

It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At InterContinental Hotels Group

The Non-Executive Chairman of the Board Patrick Cescau made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for UK£202k worth of shares at a price of UK£27.21 each. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of UK£45.82. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.
