We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in The City Pub Group plc (LON:CPC).

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.

We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At City Pub Group

The Executive Chairman Clive Watson made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for UK£274k worth of shares at a price of UK£0.50 each. We do like to see buying, but this purchase was made at well below the current price of UK£0.82. Because it occurred at a lower valuation, it doesn't tell us much about whether insiders might find today's price attractive.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 782.72k shares worth UK£448k. But insiders sold 30.00k shares worth UK£57k. In the last twelve months there was more buying than selling by City Pub Group insiders. Their average price was about UK£0.57. To my mind it is good that insiders have invested their own money in the company. However, we do note that they were buying at significantly lower prices than today's share price.
