Anexo Group (LON:ANX) stock falls 23% in past week as three-year earnings and shareholder returns continue downward trend
If you love investing in stocks you're bound to buy some losers. Long term Anexo Group Plc (LON:ANX) shareholders know that all too well, since the share price is down considerably over three years. Unfortunately, they have held through a 59% decline in the share price in that time. The last week also saw the share price slip down another 23%.
With the stock having lost 23% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Anexo Group saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 16% per year, over the last three years. The share price decline of 25% is actually steeper than the EPS slippage. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past. This increased caution is also evident in the rather low P/E ratio, which is sitting at 5.35.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 12% in the last year, Anexo Group shareholders lost 15%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 9% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Anexo Group (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
