More Unpleasant Surprises Could Be In Store For Burberry Group plc's (LON:BRBY) Shares After Tumbling 27%
Burberry Group plc (LON:BRBY) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 27% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 34% share price drop.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Burberry Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.1x is worth a mention when the median P/S in the United Kingdom's Luxury industry is similar at about 0.7x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Burberry Group's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Burberry Group hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is moderate because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn around. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Burberry Group would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 15% decrease to the company's top line. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with revenue growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing revenue over that time.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 1.7% per annum during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 8.3% per annum growth forecast for the broader industry.
In light of this, it's curious that Burberry Group's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.
The Bottom Line On Burberry Group's P/S
Burberry Group's plummeting stock price has brought its P/S back to a similar region as the rest of the industry. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
Given that Burberry Group's revenue growth projections are relatively subdued in comparison to the wider industry, it comes as a surprise to see it trading at its current P/S ratio. At present, we aren't confident in the P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Circumstances like this present a risk to current and prospective investors who may see share prices fall if the low revenue growth impacts the sentiment.
