Mitie Group's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Based on the last payment, Mitie Group was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 25.8%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 28% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was £0.11 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was £0.043. The dividend has shrunk at around 9.0% a year during that period. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
We Could See Mitie Group's Dividend Growing
With a relatively unstable dividend, and a poor history of shrinking dividends, it's even more important to see if EPS is growing. Mitie Group has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 7.2% per annum. Earnings are on the uptrend, and it is only paying a small portion of those earnings to shareholders.
In Summary
In summary, it's great to see that the company can raise the dividend and keep it in a sustainable range. The payout ratio looks good, but unfortunately the company's dividend track record isn't stellar. This looks like it could be a good dividend stock going forward, but we would note that the payout ratio has been at higher levels in the past so it could happen again.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
