QinetiQ Group (LON:QQ.) Has Some Way To Go To Become A Multi-Bagger
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. However, after investigating QinetiQ Group (LON:QQ.), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on QinetiQ Group is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.14 = UK£158m ÷ (UK£1.8b - UK£672m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).
Thus, QinetiQ Group has an ROCE of 14%. In absolute terms, that's a pretty normal return, and it's somewhat close to the Aerospace & Defense industry average of 13%.

In the above chart we have measured QinetiQ Group's prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you're interested, you can view the analysts predictions in our free analyst report for QinetiQ Group .
The Trend Of ROCE
Over the past five years, QinetiQ Group's ROCE and capital employed have both remained mostly flat. This tells us the company isn't reinvesting in itself, so it's plausible that it's past the growth phase. So unless we see a substantial change at QinetiQ Group in terms of ROCE and additional investments being made, we wouldn't hold our breath on it being a multi-bagger.
The Key Takeaway
In summary, QinetiQ Group isn't compounding its earnings but is generating stable returns on the same amount of capital employed. Yet to long term shareholders the stock has gifted them an incredible 115% return in the last five years, so the market appears to be rosy about its future. But if the trajectory of these underlying trends continue, we think the likelihood of it being a multi-bagger from here isn't high.
