Diploma (LON:DPLM) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year
Diploma PLC (LON:DPLM) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 2nd of February to £0.40. Despite this raise, the dividend yield of 1.7% is only a modest boost to shareholder returns.

Diploma's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Based on the last payment, Diploma was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 41.0%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 52% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of £0.144 in 2013 to the most recent total annual payment of £0.565. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 15% per annum over that time. Diploma has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. It's encouraging to see that Diploma has been growing its earnings per share at 13% a year over the past five years. Shareholders are getting plenty of the earnings returned to them, which combined with strong growth makes this quite appealing.
Diploma Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Diploma is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
