It is doubtless a positive to see that the Ceres Power Holdings plc (LON:CWR) share price has gained some 37% in the last three months. But that is meagre solace in the face of the shocking decline over three years. Indeed, the share price is down a whopping 81% in the last three years. So it sure is nice to see a bit of an improvement. Of course the real question is whether the business can sustain a turnaround. While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness.

If the past week is anything to go by, investor sentiment for Ceres Power Holdings isn't positive, so let's see if there's a mismatch between fundamentals and the share price.

Because Ceres Power Holdings made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last three years Ceres Power Holdings saw its revenue shrink by 6.0% per year. That's not what investors generally want to see. Having said that the 22% annualized share price decline highlights the risk of investing in unprofitable companies. We're generally averse to companies with declining revenues, but we're not alone in that. Don't let a share price decline ruin your calm. You make better decisions when you're calm.

A Different Perspective

Investors in Ceres Power Holdings had a tough year, with a total loss of 57%, against a market gain of about 9.1%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 1.0% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Ceres Power Holdings you should know about.
