Returns On Capital Are Showing Encouraging Signs At Cohort (LON:CHRT)
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So on that note, Cohort (LON:CHRT) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Cohort, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = UK£12m ÷ (UK£151m - UK£38m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to October 2020).
Thus, Cohort has an ROCE of 11%. In absolute terms, that's a pretty normal return, and it's somewhat close to the Aerospace & Defense industry average of 12%.

The increasing returns on a growing amount of capital is common amongst multi-baggers and that's why we're impressed.
In Conclusion...
In summary, it's great to see that Cohort can compound returns by consistently reinvesting capital at increasing rates of return, because these are some of the key ingredients of those highly sought after multi-baggers. And a remarkable 103% total return over the last five years tells us that investors are expecting more good things to come in the future. So given the stock has proven it has promising trends, it's worth researching the company further to see if these trends are likely to persist.
