Ayvens (EPA:AYV) Is Paying Out Less In Dividends Than Last Year

Ayvens (EPA:AYV) is reducing its dividend from last year's comparable payment to €0.37 on the 28th of May. This means the annual payment is 4.3% of the current stock price, which is above the average for the industry.

Ayvens' Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. The last dividend was quite comfortably covered by Ayvens' earnings, but it was a bit tighter on the cash flow front. The company is clearly earning enough to pay this type of dividend, but it is definitely focused on returning cash to shareholders, rather than growing the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 98.2% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 27% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Ayvens' Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

Looking back, Ayvens' dividend hasn't been particularly consistent. This makes us cautious about the consistency of the dividend over a full economic cycle. Since 2018, the dividend has gone from €0.55 total annually to €0.37. The dividend has shrunk at around 5.5% a year during that period. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.

The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential

Given that dividend payments have been shrinking like a glacier in a warming world, we need to check if there are some bright spots on the horizon. Ayvens' EPS has fallen by approximately 12% per year during the past five years. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this becomes a long term trend.

Our Thoughts On Ayvens' Dividend

Overall, the dividend looks like it may have been a bit high, which explains why it has now been cut. The company hasn't been paying a very consistent dividend over time, despite only paying out a small portion of earnings. We don't think Ayvens is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
