SRP Groupe S.A.'s (EPA:SRP) Popularity With Investors Under Threat As Stock Sinks 25%

SRP Groupe S.A. (EPA:SRP) shares have had a horrible month, losing 25% after a relatively good period beforehand. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 26% share price drop.

Although its price has dipped substantially, there still wouldn't be many who think SRP Groupe's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x is worth a mention when the median P/S in France's Specialty Retail industry is similar at about 0.2x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How SRP Groupe Has Been Performing

SRP Groupe could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S from falling. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like SRP Groupe's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 4.5%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 11% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 0.04% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 8.5%.

In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that SRP Groupe's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining revenues are likely to weigh on the share price eventually.
