In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But in any portfolio, there are likely to be some stocks that fall short of that benchmark. We regret to report that long term PCAS SA (EPA:PCA) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 48% in three years, versus a market return of about 17%. And over the last year the share price fell 38%, so we doubt many shareholders are delighted. Furthermore, it's down 17% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.

Because PCAS made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

Over the last three years, PCAS' revenue dropped 1.3% per year. That's not what investors generally want to see. The stock has disappointed holders over the last three years, falling 14%, annualized. And with no profits, and weak revenue, are you surprised? Of course, sentiment could become too negative, and the company may actually be making progress to profitability.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that PCAS shareholders are down 38% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 0.7%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 6%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that PCAS is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is concerning...
