Downgrade: Here's How Analysts See Genfit S.A. (EPA:GNFT) Performing In The Near Term
The latest analyst coverage could presage a bad day for Genfit S.A. (EPA:GNFT), with the analysts making across-the-board cuts to their statutory estimates that might leave shareholders a little shell-shocked. Both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) estimates were cut sharply as the analysts factored in the latest outlook for the business, concluding that they were too optimistic previously.
After the downgrade, the consensus from Genfit's six analysts is for revenues of €15m in 2022, which would reflect a painful 83% decline in sales compared to the last year of performance. Following this this downgrade, earnings are now expected to tip over into loss-making territory, with the analysts forecasting losses of €0.84 per share in 2022. Yet prior to the latest estimates, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of €29m and losses of €0.71 per share in 2022. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a serious cut to their revenue forecasts while also expecting losses per share to increase.

There was no major change to the consensus price target of €10.23, signalling that the business is performing roughly in line with expectations, despite lower earnings per share forecasts. That's not the only conclusion we can draw from this data however, as some investors also like to consider the spread in estimates when evaluating analyst price targets. The most optimistic Genfit analyst has a price target of €13.00 per share, while the most pessimistic values it at €8.70. This shows there is still some diversity in estimates, but analysts don't appear to be totally split on the stock as though it might be a success or failure situation.
Of course, another way to look at these forecasts is to place them into context against the industry itself. We would highlight that sales are expected to reverse, with a forecast 83% annualised revenue decline to the end of 2022. That is a notable change from historical growth of 42% over the last five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 32% annually for the foreseeable future. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - Genfit is expected to lag the wider industry.
The Bottom Line
The most important thing to note from this downgrade is that the consensus increased its forecast losses this year, suggesting all may not be well at Genfit. Unfortunately analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, and industry data suggests that Genfit's revenues are expected to grow slower than the wider market. We're also surprised to see that the price target went unchanged. Still, deteriorating business conditions (assuming accurate forecasts!) can be a leading indicator for the stock price, so we wouldn't blame investors for being more cautious on Genfit after the downgrade.
Still, the long-term prospects of the business are much more relevant than next year's earnings. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for Genfit going out to 2024, and you can see them free on our platform here.
