Alchimie SA's (EPA:ALCHI) Shares Bounce 28% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry
Those holding Alchimie SA (EPA:ALCHI) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 28% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 67% share price drop in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, considering around half the companies operating in France's Entertainment industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 0.9x, you may still consider Alchimie as an solid investment opportunity with its 0.2x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Alchimie Has Been Performing
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Alchimie over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. Those who are bullish on Alchimie will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Alchimie would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 49%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 61% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 19% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.
With this information, we are not surprised that Alchimie is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
The Final Word
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Alchimie's P/S close to the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
Our examination of Alchimie confirms that the company's shrinking revenue over the past medium-term is a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, given the industry is projected to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
