The three-year underlying earnings growth at Equasens Société anonyme (EPA:EQS) is promising, but the shareholders are still in the red over that time

Investing in stocks inevitably means buying into some companies that perform poorly. But the last three years have been particularly tough on longer term Equasens Société anonyme (EPA:EQS) shareholders. Regrettably, they have had to cope with a 53% drop in the share price over that period. And more recent buyers are having a tough time too, with a drop of 31% in the last year. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 24% in the last three months.

Since Equasens Société anonyme has shed €54m from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Although the share price is down over three years, Equasens Société anonyme actually managed to grow EPS by 6.9% per year in that time. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

We note that, in three years, revenue has actually grown at a 5.5% annual rate, so that doesn't seem to be a reason to sell shares. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching Equasens Société anonyme more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Equasens Société anonyme, it has a TSR of -50% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

Equasens Société anonyme shareholders are down 29% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 3.0%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 6% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. Keeping this in mind, a solid next step might be to take a look at Equasens Société anonyme's dividend track record. This free interactive graph is a great place to start.
