The analysts covering Laurent-Perrier S.A. (EPA:LPE) delivered a dose of negativity to shareholders today, by making a substantial revision to their statutory forecasts for this year. Revenue estimates were cut sharply as analysts signalled a weaker outlook - perhaps a sign that investors should temper their expectations as well.

Following the latest downgrade, the current consensus, from the three analysts covering Laurent-Perrier, is for revenues of €314m in 2024, which would reflect a noticeable 6.7% reduction in Laurent-Perrier's sales over the past 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are anticipated to sink 13% to €9.43 in the same period. Prior to this update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of €341m and earnings per share (EPS) of €9.46 in 2024. So it looks like the analysts have become a bit less optimistic after the latest consensus updates announcement, with revenues expected to fall even as the company is supposed to maintain EPS.

Looking at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can make sense of these forecasts is to see how they measure up against both past performance and industry growth estimates. These estimates imply that sales are expected to slow, with a forecast annualised revenue decline of 6.7% by the end of 2024. This indicates a significant reduction from annual growth of 4.4% over the last five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 5.1% annually for the foreseeable future. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - Laurent-Perrier is expected to lag the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that there's been no major change in sentiment, with analysts reconfirming that earnings per share are expected to continue performing in line with their prior expectations. Unfortunately analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, and industry data suggests that Laurent-Perrier's revenues are expected to grow slower than the wider market. Given the stark change in sentiment, we'd understand if investors became more cautious on Laurent-Perrier after today.
