Here's Why We Think VIEL & Cie société anonyme (EPA:VIL) Is Well Worth Watching

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like VIEL & Cie société anonyme (EPA:VIL), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is VIEL & Cie société anonyme Growing?

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Impressively, VIEL & Cie société anonyme has grown EPS by 22% per year, compound, in the last three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). While we note VIEL & Cie société anonyme's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 13% to €918m. That's a real positive.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check VIEL & Cie société anonyme's balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.

Are VIEL & Cie société anonyme Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own VIEL & Cie société anonyme shares worth a considerable sum. To be specific, they have €23m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Those holdings account for over 5.9% of the company; visible skin in the game.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like VIEL & Cie société anonyme with market caps between €163m and €651m is about €460k.

The VIEL & Cie société anonyme CEO received €333k in compensation for the year ending . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.

Is VIEL & Cie société anonyme Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about VIEL & Cie société anonyme's strong EPS growth. If that's not enough, consider also that the CEO pay is quite reasonable, and insiders are well-invested alongside other shareholders. Each to their own, but I think all this makes VIEL & Cie société anonyme look rather interesting indeed. It is worth noting though that we have found 2 warning signs for VIEL & Cie société anonyme (1 is significant!) that you need to take into consideration.

Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
