Pulling back 6.1% this week, Altamir's EPA:LTA) five-year decline in earnings may be coming into investors focus
Generally speaking the aim of active stock picking is to find companies that provide returns that are superior to the market average. Buying under-rated businesses is one path to excess returns. For example, the Altamir SCA (EPA:LTA) share price is up 52% in the last 5 years, clearly besting the market return of around 32% (ignoring dividends).
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 6.1%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the five years of share price growth, Altamir moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd hope to see the share price to rise.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
We know that Altamir has improved its bottom line lately, but is it going to grow revenue? You could check out this free report showing analyst revenue forecasts.
What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Altamir, it has a TSR of 88% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Altamir shareholders are down 7.8% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 4.6%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 13% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Altamir better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - Altamir has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
