To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. Although, when we looked at TietoEVRY Oyj (HEL:TIETO), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for TietoEVRY Oyj, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.11 = €252m ÷ (€3.3b - €1.0b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).

So, TietoEVRY Oyj has an ROCE of 11%. By itself that's a normal return on capital and it's in line with the industry's average returns of 11%.

The Trend Of ROCE

On the surface, the trend of ROCE at TietoEVRY Oyj doesn't inspire confidence. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 11% from 16% five years ago. However it looks like TietoEVRY Oyj might be reinvesting for long term growth because while capital employed has increased, the company's sales haven't changed much in the last 12 months. It's worth keeping an eye on the company's earnings from here on to see if these investments do end up contributing to the bottom line.

The Bottom Line

To conclude, we've found that TietoEVRY Oyj is reinvesting in the business, but returns have been falling. And in the last five years, the stock has given away 15% so the market doesn't look too hopeful on these trends strengthening any time soon. In any case, the stock doesn't have these traits of a multi-bagger discussed above, so if that's what you're looking for, we think you'd have more luck elsewhere.
