If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out Bittium Oyj (HEL:BITTI) Before It's Too Late
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Bittium Oyj (HEL:BITTI). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

Bittium Oyj's Improving Profits
In the last three years Bittium Oyj's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like a wedge-tailed eagle on the wind, Bittium Oyj's EPS soared from €0.13 to €0.20, in just one year. That's a commendable gain of 58%.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Bittium Oyj maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 27% to €84m. That's progress.

Bittium Oyj isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of €222m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.
Are Bittium Oyj Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that Bittium Oyj insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. To be specific, they have €28m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Those holdings account for over 13% of the company; visible skin in the game.
It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Bittium Oyj with market caps between €82m and €329m is about €383k.
Bittium Oyj offered total compensation worth €334k to its CEO in the year to . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.
Should You Add Bittium Oyj To Your Watchlist?
You can't deny that Bittium Oyj has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. If you need more convincing beyond that EPS growth rate, don't forget about the reasonable remuneration and the high insider ownership. Each to their own, but I think all this makes Bittium Oyj look rather interesting indeed. It's still necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
