Uponor Oyj's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Based on the last dividend, Uponor Oyj is earning enough to cover the payment, but then it makes up 133% of cash flows. While the company may be more focused on returning cash to shareholders than growing the business at this time, we think that a cash payout ratio this high might expose the dividend to being cut if the business ran into some challenges.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 14.9%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 53%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Uponor Oyj Has A Solid Track Record
The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. Since 2013, the annual payment back then was €0.38, compared to the most recent full-year payment of €0.69. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 6.1% per annum over that time. The growth of the dividend has been pretty reliable, so we think this can offer investors some nice additional income in their portfolio.
The Dividend Has Growth Potential
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. It's encouraging to see that Uponor Oyj has been growing its earnings per share at 7.9% a year over the past five years. The lack of cash flows does make us a bit cautious though, especially when it comes to the future of the dividend.
In Summary
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While Uponor Oyj is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. We don't think Uponor Oyj is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
