The board of Raute Oyj (HEL:RAUTE) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of €0.55 on the 28th of April, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. Based on this payment, the dividend yield for the company will be 3.4%, which is fairly typical for the industry.

Raute Oyj's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. However, Raute Oyj's earnings easily cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

EPS is set to fall by 0.7% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, we estimate the payout ratio could be 28%, which is comfortable for the company to continue in the future.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from €0.60 total annually to €0.55. Payments have been decreasing at a very slow pace in this time period. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. However, Raute Oyj has only grown its earnings per share at 2.2% per annum over the past five years. While growth may be thin on the ground, Raute Oyj could always pay out a higher proportion of earnings to increase shareholder returns.

Our Thoughts On Raute Oyj's Dividend

Overall, this is a reasonable dividend, and it being raised is an added bonus. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. The payment isn't stellar, but it could make a decent addition to a dividend portfolio.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
